Uncertainty Flashcards

1
Q

How do we calculate uncertainty

A

Number of readings taken from piece of equipment x stated uncertainty of apparatus

Most likely will always be 1 unless its a burette them most likely 2

Q

How do we calculate % error

A

% error = (uncertainty/reading on apparatus) x 100

Q

How can we reduce uncertainty in a burette

A

Necessary to make the titre a larger volume. This could be done by:
Increasing the volume and concentration or mass of the substance in the conical flask
or
By decreasing the concentration of the substance in the burette.

Q

What can the relationship between % error and % difference between actual and calculated values tell us

A

If the %uncertainty due to the apparatus > percentage
difference between the actual value and the calculated
value then there is no discrepancy and all errors in the
results can be explained by the sensitivity of the equipment.

If the %uncertainty due to the apparatus < percentage difference between the actual value and the calculated value then there is a discrepancy in the result due to other errors.
