uncertainties and significant figures Flashcards
what is physics
attempts to describe nature in an objective way through measurement
uncertainties in measurements
plus or minus the smallest measurement or plus or minus half the smallest measurement on the instrument
time =
distance/speed
if m/s we should ?
convert the distance to m ex. 3.15cm x 10 to the power of -2m
significant figures example
3.15 has 3 sig figs
rule 1 of sig figures
when multiplying and dividing quantities leave as many sig figs in your answer as there are in the quantitiy with the least number of significant figs
rule 2 of sig figs
adding and subtracting–> same number of decimal places in answer as there are in the quantitiy with the least number of decimal places
which are more important the zeros after the first sig fig or the zeros before ?
the zeros after still count as sig figs so are important
speed=
lenght/time
measurement for speed
m/s or ms power minus 1
scientific notation example
1m=1000mm —> 1x10^3mm
means 1x10x10x10=1000
2m=2x10x10x10=2000
