UN Art 1
Purpose = Peace, friends, human rights
Outlines the UN’s purposes, including maintaining peace, developing friendly relations, and promoting human rights.
UN Art 2(4)
No use of force against other states
Prohibits UN members from threatening or using force against other states’ territorial integrity or political independence.
UN Art 2(7)
UN dgaf about domestic stuff
The UN cannot intervene in matters within a state’s domestic jurisdiction, except under Chapter VII actions.
UN Art 4
Join if you like peace and obligations
States can join the UN if peace-loving and accept its obligations, upon General Assembly approval.
UN Art 5
A member can be suspended by the UNGA upon UNSC recommendation.
UN Art 6
Lots of violations = you can get expelled
A member persistently violating the Charter can be expelled by the General Assembly upon Security Council recommendation.
UN Art 27
UNSC needs all perm. members’ votes
Security Council decisions require nine affirmative votes, including all permanent members’ concurring votes.
UN Art 41
UNSC can enforce peacefully
The Security Council can impose non-military measures, like sanctions, to enforce its decisions.
UN Art 42
UNSC can enforce non-peacefully
If non-military measures fail, the UNSC can use armed force to maintain or restore peace.
UN Art 51
Self-defence = okay if you’re attacked
Recognizes the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a UN member.
UN Art 93
UN member = ICJ member
All UN members are automatically parties to the Statute of the ICJ.
UN Art 94(2)
No compliance with ICJ? UNSC can enforce
If a state fails to comply with an ICJ judgment, the UNSC can make recommendations or take measures to enforce it.
