Ump Flashcards
Batting out of order is an appeal play. When should an appeal be made?
after batter has completed his turn and before the next pitch. - if its made during the bat - the correct batter is installed and the count resumes.
Who is out when appealing a batter out of order?
the proper batter is out
Are advances or outs made possible by the improper batter nullified in the case of a batting out of order appeal?
yes
If a fan tells you there has been a hit out of order does the play stand?
yes - only the defensive team can make the appeal play
If Baker takes Irwin’s place at bat and scores in three runs - and defence then makes an appeal - who is out? How many runs score?
Irwin is the proper batter = out. No runs score (the play is nullified)
While improper batter is up - a wild pitch allows the runners to advance. Appeal is made. Do the runners have to return to their original bases?
no - all advances made on WILD PITCH to improper batter stay standing
What are the 4 categories of interference?
Offensive - Defensive - Umpire - Spectator.
What happens in All cases of Offensive interference? What are the 3 categories of offensive interference?
NO RUNNERS MAY ADVANCE ON THE PLAY. 3 types: Interference by batter - interference by runner - interference by other offensive team members
When is batter out for interference (7 points)?
batter’s bat hits the ball a 2nd time in FAIR territory. Batter intentionally touches foul ball. Batter is touched by a FAIR batted ball while out of the batters box. Batter deliberately interferes with batted ball or fielder. Batter hinders catcher after 3rd strike. Batter runs out of 3 foot lane and interferes with THROW to 1st. Batter deliberately hinders a catcher’s fielding etc.
Who else is out if a batter deliberately interferes with a batted ball or fielder? When is this interference disregarded
the runner nearest home. Batter isn’t out if the runner nearest home gets out anyways
Who is called out when a batter interferes with the catcher?
Runner at 3rd if trying to score. If 2 outs- batter called out instead and no run scores.
What happens when batter’s interference is enforced?
batter is called out. Runners return to their previous bases. Ball is dead.
If bat flies out of batter’s hands after hit and hits the ball again - is interference called?
Yes - batter out - runners return - ball is dead
1 out. If batter interferes with a catcher’s play on runner coming home - who’s out?
runner is out - batter would be out with 2 outs
When is a runner out for interference?
fair batted ball touches runner BEFORE passing an infielder. runner intentionally interferes with a THROWN ball (hinders play on batted ball). Runner deliberately interferes with a BATTED ball (to break up double play). Runner who is already out interferes with another teammate?
Who else is out when runner deliberately interferes with a batted ball?
both runner and batter are out
What happens when runner’s interference is called?
runner called out - ball is dead - batter GETS 1ST BASE (unless he is also out). Runners return unless forced to advance.
If a runner is hit by an infield fly while touching his base is he out?
no
True/False: interference called if a fielder deflects a ball and then it hits a runner?
False - no interference if deflected
If 3rd base throws a batted ball towards second and runner touches it - who’s out?
the runner AND the batter are out
Runners on first and 2nd no outs. Both runners running - runner from second tagged - then he slaps the ball out of fielder’s hand. Who is out?
runner is out on tag - batter is out cuz 1st is the play that was interfered with
Situation: Runner on 1st and third - pop up near dugout isn’t caught because runner collides with 3rd baseman - What’s the call?
runner out for interference - batting continues
Situation: Batter-runner is hit by throw from the catcher trying to get him out. Is the batter safe or out?
OUT - he was not running in the 3 foot lane so he interfered with the throw to first
Situation: Bases loaded no outs - ball thrown to second so the runner from 1st is out BUT this runner collides with the 2nd baseman to stop double play. Whats the call?
runner from 1st out on force. Batter-runner out for teammate’s illegal actions - all other runners return
What is defensive interference?
catcher or fielder interferes with the batter. Batter gets 1st base
How is defensive interference called?
if there’s a play the play continues. If batter does not reach 1st base & all other runners do not advance 1 base - then interference is ruled. batter awarded 1st - runners move if forced.
What is the catch with defensive interference?
offensive team can choose to decline the interference and accept the play
True or false: fielder throws glove at batted ball to prevent a home run. So no home run happens
False - fielder cannot take away home run by throwing equipment at the ball
