Ultrasound Flashcards
1
Q
Ultrasound frequencies are greater than…
A
20kHz
2
Q
For medical imaging ultrasound frequencies are usually within…
A
1MHz to 20MHz
3
Q
List 3 benefits of using ultrasound imaging instead of X-rays.
A
- Can detect and distinguish many different types of tissues in the body.
- Much safer because ultrasonic waves are not ionsing.
- Results can be shown in real time.
4
Q
Explain how transducers generate ultrasonic waves and receive data from reflections.
A
Piezoelectric crystals vibrate when a small voltage is turned on and off on either side of the crystal, creating an ultrasonic wave. When waves are reflected back the crystals vibrate and cause a small voltage to be generated which sends data to an imaging computer.
5
Q
Describe an A-scan.
A
- No image is produced
- Shows reflected intensities over time
- Measurements can be taken to nearest mm.
6
Q
Describe a B-scan
A
- Uses an array of transducers
- Many echoes collected and collated
- Images produced
7
Q
Define acoustic impedance.
A
The resistance to sound travelling through a substance.
