ultrasound Flashcards
what is ultrasound
sounds with frequencies over 20000Hz
what happens when ultrasound waves reach a boundary between two different mediums
waves are partially reflected, some are reflected back whereas the rest is transmitted and refracted
what can ultrasound waves help examine when the object is solid and how
internal structure of the object - wave will be reflected every time it hits a boundary so you can tell how far away the boundary is
how can u tell how far away the boundary is
the time it takes to reach a detector can be used to measure it
how is ultrasound used in medical imaging
when the wave reaches the boundary between the fluid and foetus, it is reflected back
the timing and distribution of these echoes are processed to produce and image on the computer to see if the baby is healthy
why are ultrasounds safe
the alternative is x days which are high energy electromagnetic waves which have enough energy to kill or damage human cells
what are ultrasounds used for in industry
to check quality of products
if a material is solid what should happen when a ultrasound wave goes through it
it should only be reflected back once entering and on the far side (only at each end of object)
how can u tell if there’s a crack in the object (a fault)
if the wave is reflected sooner than expected inside the object
what is SONAR
echo sounding underwater
what is sonar used for
finding distance between objects underwater or the seabed
how do u find out the distance between the objects in the water
distance = speed x time (then divide by two)
of the reflection as the ultrasound wage gets reflected at the boundary between the water and object
