What are the pros and cons of ultrasound guided FB removal in the ED?
A
Pros
- No radiation
- Can visualise non-radiopaque FB’s
- Active guidance of FB removal
- Assess immediate post procedural complications
- Assess adjacent structures (ie arteries)
- Assess for infection/abscess
Cons
- Operator dependent
- Air tracks may obscure visualisation
- FB may not be echogenic
- Calcification may mimic FB
- Large laceration may prevent adequate skin contact
- Removal equipment (ie forceps, needle etc) may obscure views

Q
How does and SOB appear on bowel ultrasound?
A
- Dilated loops >3cm
- Ineffective peristalsis
- Prominent valvulae conniventes
- Mural gas/intraluminal free fluid (signs of severity)
