Ultrasound Flashcards
Ultrasound is:
Deep heating modality that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy by piezoelectric mechanism.
Frequency:
More than 20,000KHz
1MHz = deep tissues
3MHz = superficial tissues
Indications:
- Edema
- Inflammation
- Wounds
Applications:
- Direct contact
- Water bath
- Water bag
Ultrasound is considered:
Micromassage
Current:
Pulsed = acute Continuous = chronic
Movement and pattern:
Movement should always be slow
4 patterns: overlapping circular, circular, transverse, figurative
Intensity:
Acute = 0.1-0.5 Chronic = 0.5-2 (best 0.8 up to 1)
Duration:
Acute = 4 mins Chronic = 8 mins
Indications for water bath:
Irregular surfaces
Indications for water bag:
Irregular surfaces
Wounds
Dangers:
- Burns
- Cavitation
- Overdose
- Damage to equipment
Physiological effects:
Thermal = relief pain, reduce edema and inflammation Non-thermal = microsteaming
Water bag:
Should be thin 1 cm
Transparent
Functions of ultrasound:
Absorption
Scattering
Which matter absorbs faster: Solid or gas?
Solid
Absorbs most:
Tendons
Ligaments
Fascia
Muscles
4 parameters:
- Mode
- Frequency
- Duration
