ULO 8- Reflection, Learning styles and Critical thinking Flashcards
How do midwives continue professional development
through reflection and self-awareness
What 3 inter-related aspects must be considered to be self-aware
cognition (thinking)
Affect (feeling)
Behaviour (acting)
What are the 3 layers of Self-awareness
1st-superficial awareness of basic personal attribute Eg. age, gender
2nd- selective awareness, including things we feel we need to be aware of Eg. our outward appearance, how we express attitudes
3rd- deeper awareness that reflects our deepest thoughts, secrets and issues known only to ourselves
Define: Reflection
is a means of self-examination that requires the individual to ‘look’ over what has happened in practice to evaluate and improve it, as well encouraging professional growth and development
List some essential qualities for midwives
empathy companionship honesty commitment reflectiveness Resilience
Explain: Reflection
it is about:
- learning from experiences
- asking questions about experiences
- planning for the future
- thinking things over
What are the stages of the Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Description Feelings Evaluation Analysis Conclusion Action Plan
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Explain: Description
- factual explanation of event
- some background information about the place and people involved
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Explain: Feelings
- an exploration of your feelings towards event (at time and after)
- be honest however non offensive
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Explain: Evaluation
- how satisfactory was the event (your opinion and that of others)
- your judgement on if there were good and bad aspects
- was it resolved afterwards, if not why?
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Explain: Analysis
- Provide more detail/depth about the context and things that influenced the event
- Reference any theory that underpinned your understanding of the event
- Relate your experience and draw on other’s work (reference)
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Explain: Conclusion
- What did you learn from the event
- could anything else have been done to change the direction taken
- could things have been improved or avoided
- what will you do next time
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Explain: Action Plan
- what needs to be done for you to improve for next time
- Are there issues you need to give attention (skills or knowledge)
- How will you fix these issues
Why is reflection important in evidence based midwifery?
- Bridges the theory practice gap
- Reduces custom based practices
- Develop and understand your practice
- Learn from decisions and implications for future practice
- Ensures care remains woman-focused
Define: Critical Thinking
is the process of assessing claims and making judgements on the basis of well-supported evidence
