Explain: Vitamin K synthesis establishment
Colonisation of the intestine by the bacteria that synthesise vitamin K does not occur until milk feeding is established.
Explain: Vitamin K deficiency bleeding
VKDB occurs in 3 forms
- Early (<48 hours),
- Classic (2–7 days)
- Late (1 week to 6 months)
What is the Vitamin K dosage
IM- single 1mg dose at birth
Oral- 3 doses (birth, 1wk and 6wks)
Which period is considered the most critical for teratogenic effects
1st trimester
Explain: Hepatic first pass
is before the drug molecules reach the general circulation, they must pass through the liver

Explain: Vision
- Babies are sensitive to bright lights, which make them blink or frown.
- They focus at a distance of 15–20 cm
- show a preference for the shape of the human face and bold black-and-white pattern

- Newborn babies turn towards localised sound
- High-pitched sound makes them blink or startle.
- They are comforted by low-pitched sounds such as the crooning noises mothers make to comfort a crying baby

- Babies like the smell of human milk and can differentiate their mother’s milk within a few days
- prefer a sweet taste and turn away from unpleasant smells
- respond to being picked up, stroked and talked to.
