What is ulcerative colitis?
A chronic, life-long life, inflammatory condition, with diffuse mucosal inflammation. It has a relapsing-remitting pattern.
What is proctitis?
Inflammation of the rectum
What is proctosigmoiditis?
Inflammation of the rectum and sigmoid colon
What is left-sided colitis?
A disease involving the colon distal to the splenic flexure
What’s extensive colitis?
This affects the colon proximal to the splenic flexure, and includes pan-colitis, where the whole colon is involved.
What are the main symptoms of active disease or relapse of ulcerative colitis?
Bloody diarrhoea, an urgent need to defaecate, and abdominal pain.
Complications of ulcerative colitis includes what?
Increased risk of colorectal cancer, secondary osteoporosis, venous thromboembolism, and toxic megacolon.
Aim of treatment for ulcerative colitis?
Manage symptoms and induce and maintain remission
What medical treatment is normally used for Ulcerative colitis?
Aminosalicylates and corticosteroid
What medicinal form should be given if inflammation is distal?
A rectal preparation
What medicinal form should be given if the inflammation is extended?
Systemic medication
