Contraindications for giving combined hormonal contraception e.g. pill, ring or patches
RF’s for VTE- obesity BMI>35, smoking >15 cigarettes a day, previous VTE, stroke, IHD, AF.
Do not give in migraine with aura, SLE, antiphospholipid syndrome, liver cirrhosis and tumours
Do not give after the age of 35.
If the women is breastfeeding, when can you start combined hormonal contraception?
If breastfeeding- wait 6 weeks
If not breastfeeding- wait 3 weeks.
When can you not give progesterone only contraception (pill, implant and depot)?
In current breast cancer or past breast cancer
Liver cirrhosis or tumours
Unexplained vaginal bleeding (can give pill in this)
When would you not prescribe the IUD/IUS?
Current endometrial cancer, cervical cancer or uterine fibroids that distort the uterine cavity.
Cant give in pelvic inflammatory disease
Cant give in current chlamydia, gonorrhoea and TB.
