BREXIT [2016]

A

This referendum was to ask whether the UK was to leave or remain in the EU

  • voter turnout was 72%
  • yes = 51.9% no = 48.1%

pros
- allowed for the gain in democratic control over borders and waters
-control over our own money and freedom over regulations

cons
- BREXIT had a diffuse impact by reducing UK’s competition and openess to trade with a wide range of countries
-reduction of skilled immigrants, made it harder to the UK to provide high quality education and health

Welsh Devolution

A
  • there was not much nationionalist support welsh devolution compared to Scottish devolution
  • in 2011 there was a referendum where further powers were devolved to Wales
  • Senedd and Elections (Wales) Act 2020 led to a change of name for the leigslature to “Senedd Cymru” or the “the Welsh Parliament”
  • there was a lot of conflict between DUP (who wanted a union) vs Shinn Fein who want separation

Northern Ireland Devolution

A
  • devolution in Northern Ireland is different to Scotland and wales as it was a part of a wider solution to the ‘troubles’ (conflict between Catholic and Protestant)
  • there devolved parliament that was dissolved in 1972 due to increased violence
  • the Belfast Agreement 1998, AKA the Good Friday Agreement restored the devolved powers
  • the Westminster parliament suspended the Assembly in 2002 until 2007 due to failure of the two ministers from different communities to work together
