UK Physical 4.1 Flashcards
Geology definition
The science which deals with the physical structure and substance of the earth, their history, and the processes which act on them.
Rocks primary found in the UK
Sedimentary is in the lowland area Igneous and metamorphic are found in the upland areas.
How large is the area between the North and South Downs.
200km squared
How was the North and south down area formed.
First tectonic plates push land of sedimentary rock together for it to rise in a curve called anticlines. It then begins to erode chalk first make it very steep the greensand twice then clay all very quickly and ate the moment it is eroding hasting beds slowly.
Formation of igneous rocks
Igneous rocks are formed by volcanoes basalt is formed by lava outside the earths crust cooling quickly making small crystals and granite is made from magma inside the earths surface cooling slowly creating large crystals.
Formation of metamorphic rocks
Metamorphic rocks have been subject to extreme heat and pressure changing them into a different type of rock.
Formation of sedimentary rocks
Sedimentary rocks are formed from sediments that have settled at the bottom of a lake, sea or ocean, and have been compressed over millions of years. The sediment comes from eroded rocks carried there by rivers or ice, and from the skeletons of sea creatures.
