UK landscapes Flashcards
Describe what a moraine is
A mass of small rocks and sediment carried down in a river-shaped stream.
Describe what a drumlin is
A low hill, shaped like the back of a spoon.
Describe what a erratic is
A boulder that differs from the surrounding rock.
List the 4 different types of moraine and describe them
Ground - high irregularity in their geographical topography, no ridges
Lateral - product of rock fall onto the margin of a glacier
Medial - formed when a tributary glacier joins with a main glacier
Terminal - high ridge of concentrated sediment where the moraine ends
Define “glacier”
A slow-moving river of ice that flows across the land.
Define “corrie”
A lake in a dip in the landscape of a valley
Define “hanging valley”
A small glacier
Define “ribbon lake”
A thin narrow lake in a U-shaped valley
Define “glacial trough”
A U-shaped valley
Define “arete”
A ridge in the landscape
Define “truncated spur”
A previously interlocking spur
How are meanders formed?
The water is pushed to the outside bend by the hydraulic action. This erodes the side of the river.
Define “meander”
A bend in a river
Define “river discharge”
The volume of water flowing through a channel at any given point.
Describe how interlocking spurs are formed
They form when a river is flowing through a V-shaped valley it will bump into more resistant rock, pushing the water through the less resistant rock.
