What is a constitution?
A set of rules that establish a country’s governmental and political system
Give 3 reasons why a constitution is needed
- establishes how power is distributed
- asserts how citizens rights are protected
- establishes how the constitution can be amended
When was the Magma carter formed and what is it?
1215- established the rule of law that the government must operate within the law and the law should apply equally to all citizens.
What is the ‘rule of law’?
The idea that nobody is above the law, it is the constitutional that is in charge
How did the Magna Carta come about?
People were unhappy with King johns large taxes and captured London and forced to negotiate
When was the act of settlement and what happened?
Established monarch’s position as a ruler of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
Established the rules of succession to the throne should be determined by the parliament
When was the act of union
Established union of great Britain, but dissolved Scottish Parliament, But dissolved Scottish Parliament so just one for the whole of the uk
When was the Parliaments act and what happened?
1911/1949- limited the power of the HOL, so they could only delay legislation for one year and took away their power of financial matters
