UCAS MOCKS JUNE 2022 Flashcards
What is an Aramid fibre ? (Give some examples)
A strong synthetic fibre used for military applications eg. Nomex for firefighters , Kevlar for police bulletproof
What is fad?
A fashion cycle that is a temporary “craze” . A must have item eg. Leg warmers in the 80’s
What is classic ?
A fashion cycle that remains popular over years , always worn and never go out of fashion eg. Cardigans
What is standard ?
A fashion cycle that has longer popularity than fad but shorter than classic . Short lived trends , longer than fad , eg. Flared trousers
Describe a plain weave
Simplest weave that has a plain surface . Over under over under . Produces strong firm fabrics eg. Calico, chiffon
Describe a twill weave fabric
Twill weave produces diagonal lines on the cloth . Over two under two over two under two under two over two under two over two under two . Hardest wearing weave . More Likely to fray eg, tartan , denim
Describe a satin weave
Smooth and lustrous appearance , least interlacing points , frays very easy , not hard wearing . Right and wrong side eg. Satin , sateen
Characteristics of speciality weaves ?
Lightweight , colourful , comfortable , embroidered , chequered
How is a regenerated fibre made?
Wet spinning - wood pulp is dissolved in a solvent to make a liquid called the spinning solution , it is filtered , and pushed through a spinneret which solidifies the filaments . The drawing process stretches the fibre and winding collects it all (like a fruit winder aha)
How is a synthetic fibre made ?
Melt spinning - All synthetics come from oil , which is made into a polymer and cut into small pieces and melt into a liquid solution . This solution is pushed through a spinneret and meets a stream of cold air to solidify them . They are drawn and then winded
Tell me about absorbency ?
Natural and regenerated fibres are absorbent as they have more amorphous regions . Synthetic are highly crystalline therefore have nowhere to absorb water . Absorbent fabrics take a long time to dry and can be dyed easily
Tell me about strength in fibres?
Regenerated have less oriented areas and tend to be weak . Synthetic are the opposite
What can affect the properties and characteristics of fibres ?
The shape of the spinneret holes gives different properties
What are the properties of ceramic and carbon fibres?
These are micro encapsulated into a fibre , ceramic - high tensile strength , low density , UV protection , regulates body temp .
Carbon - low density , high tensile strength
What products can carbon and ceramic encapsulations help
Gortex- outside wear , rip resistant , regular body temp
Esmo and sunfit
What fashion clothing was Mary quant famous for ?
Quant was famous for her credited design of the miniskirt , as well as hot pants which centered the named swinging 60’s. Block colours , flared shapes , she was focused on the youth low budget market , and did this by using inexpensive fabrics such as tricel

- continually differentiate and adapt your product
- meeting wants and needs of consumer
- relevant as the feedback is from the consumer
- consider other aspects perhaps not thought of
