Q

Why was Pompey’s third triumph after the reorganisation of Asia Minor into another of Rome’s territories “unprecedented in Roman history” according to Plutarch?

A

“But what seemed to be the greatest of all and one quite unprecedented in Roman history was that this third triumph if gus was over the third continent.” (Plutarch)

“…in his three triumphs he seemed in a sense to have led the whole world captive.” (Plutarch)

Context: Pompey had successfully defeated foes in Africa, Europe, and Asia. By the time he’d started marching his troops back to Italy, he was undisputedly the champion of Rome.

Q

Due to the chaos in Rome thanks to the Triumvirate, the senate enacted martial law (consultum ultimum) in 52 BCE.
What did Pompey do to restore order in Rome?

A

Firstly, Pompey brought in his soldiers to act as a police force, putting an end to street violence.

Secondly, he enacted laws to curb corruption and re-establish order in the political system. Under these laws, the optimates in the senate started calling for Caesar’s arrest for his misconduct during his consolship.
