U3 T2 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the oxidizing agent? What is the reducing agent?

A

The species that helps the other species reduce is the reducing agent.
The reducing agent is being oxidised

The oxidising agent is being reduced.

Q

Write a complete list of instructions to balance a redox reaction. (A- Tier Difficulty)

A
  1. Determine oxidation numbers
  2. Figure out which is being oxidised (increase in state) and reduced (decrease in oxidation state)
  3. Write half reactions
  4. Balance atoms other than O & H
  5. Add H2O to balance O, and H+ to balance H
  6. Add electrons to balance charges. (Can only reduce overall charge)
  7. Multiply half reactions to make electrons equal in both.
  8. Add half reactions & cancel out stuff on both sides

Q

Write rules for all oxidation states. (S tier) ( v🥒🍅)

A
  1. The oxidation state of any element is zero.
  2. The oxidation state of a monatomic ion is the same as the charge on that ion.
  3. The oxidation state of hydrogen in compounds is always +1, except when forming metal hydrides, when it is -1.
  4. The oxidation state of oxygen in any compound is always -2, except when forming peroxides, where it is -1, and in F,O, where it is +2.
  5. In a neutral compound, the sum of the oxidation states must always equal zero.
  6. In ions, the sum of the oxidation states must always equal the charge on the ion.
  7. The most electronegative species in a compound is assigned the negative oxidation state; the less electronegative species is assigned the positive oxidation state.
  8. Group 1 metals always +1, Group 2 metals always 2+, Fluorine always -1,

Q

What is the use of the salt bridge?

A

An electrolyte solution which helps maintain the neutrality of the electrodes. Gives negatively charged ions to anode, gives positively charged ions to cathode.
