What is autoimmunity?
A
immune response directed against self antigens (auto antigens)

What factors can influence the presence of autoimmunity?
A
- combination of susceptibility genes
- external triggers e.g. environment, infections, trauma

How could autoimmune diseases be described?
A
- systemic (non-organ specific) or organ-specific
- involve adaptive immune system and mix of mechanisms from Type II, III, IV hypersensitivities

- overactive thyroid - Graves Disease
- underactive thyroid - Hashimoto’s Disease
- Pernicious anaemia - stomach

- Type 1 diabetes
- Rheumatoid arthritis - systemic
- SLE (systemic lupus)
