questions to test basic and further knowledge
KAU
identify the 2 types of nucleic acids
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) & RNA (ribonucleic acid)
What is a nucleotide?
The monomer in nucleic acids. In DNA, a nucleotide consists of a negatively charged phosphate group and deoxyribose pentose sugar group as well as a nitrogenous pase (A,T,C &G) and in RNA a nucleotide consists of a negatively charged phosphate group and ribose pentose sugar group as well as a nitrogenous pase (A,U,C &G)
what are the types of bases and how do they pair?
pyridimines- A,T,U
purines- C & G
Bases pair in a complementary manner via hydrogen bonds; pyrimidines will only pair with each other via two hydrogen bonds (in RNA U is the equivalent pairing to A of T in DNA)
how is dna structured
backbone made of negatively charged phosphate groups and deoxyribose pentose sugar groups in nucleotides and nitogenous bases are perpindicular to the backbone
