What did American settlers want to escape?
religious & economic conditions in England
What did colonial governments have?
independence from the crown & Parliament, and real independence from one another.
What happened to England after the French and Indian (Seven Years) War?
England was cash-strapped
What did England expect from Colonists after the French & Indian (Seven Years) War?
to pay for their defense & protection.
What did the Colonists hate?
•Treaty of Paris, which halted westward expansion.
•Sugar & Stamp Acts (“No taxation without representation”)
•British denial of rights for suspected criminals.
Stamp Act Congress
A) First step toward a national government
B) Successfully petitioned for a repeal of the Stamp Act, but Parliament later passed the Townsend Act (tea tax).
First Continental Congress
formalized boycotts and attempted to petition King George III for a peaceful address of grievances.
Second Continental Congress
