What is conformity?
Process whereby an individual’s attitudes, beliefs and behaviours are influenced by other people
Why do people conform?
Could be a result of social pressure or they need to feel like they belong
What are factors that affect conformity?
Group Size, Group Unanimity, Public vs Private Responses, Self-Esteem, Ambiguous or Difficult Task, Status of Members of Group
What are the effects of conformity?
Chameleon Effect: imitating body language of person we are interacting with
Groupthink: the effects of collective pressure on the decision-making abilities of individual members of the group
What are Ingroup and Outgroup?
Ingroup: a social group formed when its member identify with one another; bonded by a sense of belonging
Outgroup: a social group toward which an individual feels disrespect or opposition; sometimes treated badly by the ingroup
What are the eight symptoms of groupthink?
