U2 - Gathering Data Flashcards
Name 2 methods of gathering data for the social, emotional and mental factor?
Performance profiling wheel
Coach feedback
Name 2 methods of gathering data for the physical factor?
General observation schedule
Focused observation schedule
Bleep Test
Performance profiling wheel
Give 3 reasons why we gather data?
Identifies strengths and weaknesses - which helps to select appropriate approaches for a PDP
Allows you to set targets - increases motivation and focus
Allows you to monitor/evaluate - measure or check if you are improving and then make appropriate changes
What is Quantitative data?
Numbers / Facts
What is Qualitative data?
Words / Opinions
Name a Quantitative method of gathering data
T12
Bleep test
General observation schedule
PPW - can be both
Name a Qualitative mentod of gathering data
Coach Feedback
PPW - can be both
Give a benefit and limitation of using Qualitative data?
Positives:
Identifies strengths and weaknesses
Allows you to set targets
Allows you to monitor / evaluate performance development
Provides a detailed picture - tells you why it’s a weakness
Negatives:
Experience of those giving feedback
Honesty of those giving feedback
Give a benefit and limitation of Quantitative feedback
Positives:
Identifies strengths and weaknesses
Allows you to set targets
Allows you to monitor / evaluate performance development
Easy to interpret/understand
Supports /backs up Qualitative data
Easy to compare for monitoring
Negatives:
It’s only part of the picture
Doesn’t explain why its a weakness / strength
Describe a method of gathering data for the mental, emotional and social factor (4)
Performance profiling wheel:
Circle split into 8 section Subfactors on outside (+ examples) Inside split into 10 segments Quiet space Immediately after a game Colour segment for class model performer (10 best/1 worst)(example) Colour yourself in different colour (example) Biggest gap = biggest weakness Circle biggest weakness
Describe a how you used the General observation schedule to gather data for the physical factor in badminton (4)
Full sized badminton court
• 20 minute game
• Opponent of an similar ability .
• Observer watched the game and marked tallies on my general observation sheet.
• Set up a camera to film the game so that afterwards we could watch the game again to
ensure that the third partner’s data was correct and he didn’t miss any shots.
• The data was collected on a GOBS sheet with a row of skills, such as overhead clear and
smash, at the top of the page
• Column with 5 minute windows down the side.
• If the shot was successful a tick would be placed in the corresponding box if unsuccessful a
cross was placed.
• The person watching would also move down one row every 5 minutes when my teacher
signaled.
• The criteria for a successful shot was found at the bottom of the sheet so that my partner
knew if a shot was successful.
• At the end I tallied up my successful and unsuccessful shots.
• I then identified which shot had the most unsuccessful crosses and also compared my results
with the rest of the class to find my strengths and weaknesses.
Describe how you used coach feedback to gather information on your performance (4)
- I received written feedback on a sheet of paper from my manager
- When a player was down injured during a competitive 11-a-side football game.
- The feedback detailed a tactical change that we were going to implement such as changing from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 formation.
- I then had to relay this information onto my fellow teammates, telling them to change formation the next time the ball went out of play.
- I also received verbal feedback throughout the match
- usually after I had done something wrong.
- My coach would criticise me first of all but then tell me how to improve.
- For example, he told me “would you stop making long passes that are losing possession! Make an easy pass to your teammate beside you then move into space to get it further up the pitch.”
- I was then able to adapt my game immediately after the feedback.
Give 4 reasons you would chose a PPW, GOS, T12, Coach Feedback to gather data on your performance. (4)
Identifies strengths and weaknesses - create PDP with relevant approaches
Provides a baseline - monitor performance, check for improvement… Adapt or change
Allows you to set targets - motivation
Quick - more time improving weakness
Cheap - spend money on nutrition instead which will help improve performance further
Give 4 negatives of using a PPW, GOS, T12, Coach Feedback to gather data on your performance. (4)
Boring Head of House:
Boring - rush it, unreliable data
Human error - lose data - nothing to compare at end of PDP
Other people - observer misses shots etc, distracted when filling out PPW
Honesty - lie/change results =unreliable data
Analyse - When gathering data it is important that you… (4)
Chose a suitable partner or model performer
Take a photo and upload it online
Take your time to complete it
Don’t lie
