Explain the significance of water’s high latent heat of vaportisation within this biological process
Sweat absorbs a large amount of heat energy from the body in order to reach the required energy for evaporation to occur.
When the water does vaporise, it takes all that absorbed heat energy with it, taking it away from the body, helping to reduce the body temperature.
Why does water have a relativiely high boiling temperature?
Due to the large difference in electronegativity between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms, large bond dipoles are formed, which allows for stronger forces between water molecules (hydrogen bonding). These stronger forces require greater amount of energy to overcome, thus higher melting and boiling points.
What property of water is important to life.
It is an universal solvent, due to water’s polar nature, it has the ability to form hydrogen bonds with polar molecules or ion-dipole bonds with ions, many substances are soluble in water, making it ideal for transportation for nutrients and wastes in living organisms
What is electrostatic (or ion-dipole) attraction?
