U1 T2 Bonding Flashcards
What is an ion?
A charged particle formed when an atom gains or loses electrons
What happens when electrons are lost?
Cations form (positive charge)
What happens when electrons are gained?
Anions are formed (negative charge)
What is a molecular ion?
A charged particle containing two or more atoms covalently bonded.
What happens in an ionic bond?
It occurs between a metal and a non metal. Extra electrons are given to the other atom. The opposite charges of the two ions attract each other strongly and they require a lot of energy to break.
What happens in a covalent bond?
This occurs between two non metals. Electrons are shared.
What is a covalent bond?
A shared pair of electrons
What is a molecule?
It contains two or more atoms covalently bonded.
What does diatomic mean?
Two or more atoms covalently bonded in the molecule.
What is metallic bonding?
The attraction between the positive ions in a regular lattice and the delocalised electrons.
