Q

What is gel electrophoresis?

A

When proteins and nucleic acids are separated by placing them in gel which then has a voltage applied to it, causing the negatively charged molecules to move toward the positive terminal

Q

How does SDS-PAGE exclusively sort by size?

A

All proteins are denatured, so the van de Whaals forces that fold proteins into shapes are overcome by heat, so all proteins are one long polypeptide chain. All proteins are additionally given an equal negative charge.
