Q

Why are metals good conductors of heat?

A

The particles are all very close together.

They contain delocalised electrons that are free to move around the metal and transfer kinetic energy.

Q

Describe the process of Conduction

A

As a solid is heated up the particles on the heated end gain kinetic energy and vibrate more than they would normally. This causes them to collide with their neighbours and transfer a bit of kinetic energy to them. this is repeated and also happens with the electrons.

Q

Insulators

A

Poor conductors are good insulators.
Insulators don’t transfer energy well.
Materials are poor conductors because the particles aren’t arranged neatly in rows and columns and/or have no free electrons.
