U1, C1 - Real Numbers Flashcards
Natural Numbers
Think counting.
Zero is NOT a natural number, it is tha absence of something & cant be counted.
1, 2, 3, 4
Is considered a real number.
Whole Numbers
Includes all natural numbers & zero
0, 1, 2, 3
Is considered a real number.
Integers
All nat numbers & whole numbers are ints.
Ints include negatives.
-2, -1, 0, 1, 2 …
Is considered a real number.
Rational Numbers
Includes all natural numbers, whole numbers and integers. Is considered a real number.
Rational numbers are a RATIO of two integers.
A / B where A & B are INTS. B can not be 0 (can not divide by 0)
They have either a terminating or repeating decimal pattern.
Irrational Numbers
DO NOT include natural numbers, whole numbers, integers or rational numbers.
They ARE still considered a real number.
Can not be written as a ratio of integers.
Irrational numbers are characterized by a non-terminating decimal pattern and a non-repeating decimal pattern.
Many square roots are irrational.
Terminating Decimal Pattern
Means a decimal that stops.
Eg: when you write 3/8 as a decimal, its .375
it stops at 3 decimal places.
Repeating Decimal Pattern
2/11 written as a dec is 0.18181818…. never stops
