U Values And Specific Heat Capacity Flashcards
What does the Specific Heat Capacity of a substance allow us to do?
Calculate the amount of energy needed to heat it up
Is the a Cavity wall a good insulator?
Yes
Is a double glazed window a good insulator?
No
How do Solar Panels work?
Cold water is pumped up to the solar panel where it heats up and is transferred to a storage tank. A pump pushes cold water from the storage tank through pipes in the solar panel. The water is heated by heat energy from the sun and returns to the tank.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Energy?
Advantages:
Renewable energy resource
No harmful polluting gases are produced
Disadvantages:
May only produce hot water in very sunny climates and in cooler areas may need to be supplemented with a conventional boiler
Although warm water can be produced even in cloudy days, solar panels do not work at night.
What’s the difference between heat and temperature?
Temperature is a measure of how hot something is
Heat is a measure of the thermal energy contained in an object
When heat energy is transferred to an object, it’s temperature increase depends on…
Mass
What’s it’s made from
The amount of energy transferred to an object
What is the specific heat capacity of a substance?
The amount of energy needed to change the temperature of 1kg of the substance by 1 degree Celsius
How is Water being a particularly high specific heat capacity good?
It makes water useful for storing heat energy and for transporting it around the home using central heating pipes
What is the equation for Specific Heat Capacity?
E(Energy transferred in Joules)= m(mass in kg) X C(Specific heat capacity in joules/kg) X Temperature change in degrees
What do U- Values measure?
The effectiveness of a material as an Insulator
