What happened during the typhoon?
A typhoon hit the SouthEast coast of the Philippines with winds of up to 195mph.
What were the CAUSES of the typhoon?
The sea temperature was over 26.5•C and the water was well over 60metres deep. The Coriolis Effect cause the storm to start spinning and it gained energy from the warm water.
What were the CONSEQUENCES of the typhoon?
The impacts were worsened by the fact that the country was not the most developed. Much of the population lived in poverty so many homes and buildings were destroyed. Lack of food was also a problem and disease spread quickly.
What were the IMPACTS
Social: 670,000 families made homeless
Economic: $2.6 billion of damage
Environmental: Trees uprooted and 130,000 tonnes of rice destroyed
What were the RESPONSES?
Short Term: UN appealed for £190 million and UK donated £50 million alone. British charity ShelterBox provided water purification kits.
Long Term: Clearing debris and repairing infrastructure
