Types/Theories Flashcards
Aversive
Attempts to avoid people of color, or to be formal, correct, or cold in dealing with them
Biological
Once popular view that humanity is divided into 4 or 5 major groups, corresponding to objective and real physical differences
Colorblind*
Belief that one should treat all persons equally, without regard to race and that taking note of race in any situation is race
Dominative
Acts of hostility or force to keep people of color down
Hegemonic/False Consciousness
Domination of the ruling class, and unconscious acceptance of that state of affairs by those not of it
Idealist/Ideological
Beliefs about people or groups tat deem them inferior. Some think that changing those beliefs will rid society of racism
Institutional/Structural*
Tolerating social structures and rules, usually put in place long ago, that benefit whites and disadvantage minorities
Internal Colonialism
Treating domestic minorities as though they were actual colonies: suppressing their culture, exploiting their labor, using some of them as overseers, etc.
Materialist/Economic Determinist
Racism as a collection of social practices and policies that give the dominant race, collectively and individually, greater access to material and psychic benefits
Nativism
View that certain groups in the US don’t deserve equal treatment, either bc they aren’t citizens or are a suspicious, foreign group
Psychoanalytic
Racism as a fixation or developmental arrest that associates other races with dirt, excrement, bogeymen, nightmares, etc
Rational or Statistical
Treating others on the basis of statistical generalization (cab drivers don’t stop for black men)
Unconscious*
Behavior that emanates from beliefs held at an unconscious or subtle level
Social Contact Theory
Place people of different colors in groups pursuing common objectives (sports or the military)
Confrontation Theory
Most Americans are ambivalent about race–they hold private values that are ignoble and public ones that are idealistic and noble (all men are brothers).
To strengthen the public values, enact rules punishing the expression of racism in conduct, so that the impulse will wither over time.
