Types Of Validity Flashcards
What is external validity?
The extent to which you can generalise your findings to different groups of people.
What is population validity?
Whether the sample is representative of the general population and therefore if it can be generalised.
What is ecological validity?
The extent to which you can generalise the results of the experiment from the research settings to real life situations.
What is historical validity?
Can the results be generalised to other time periods.
What is reliability?
The consistency of results.
What is internal reliability?
Consistency within the methods e.g are all the questions in a questionnaire testing the same thing.
What is external reliability?
Consistency of results overtime.
What are the three ways reliability is tested?
- Split half method
- Test re test
- Inter rater reliability
What is inter-rater reliability?
Whether multiple researchers reach a general consensus on the results of the experiment.
What is the test re-test method?
A method used to test reliability by administering a test at two different points in time.
What is the split half method?
A method used to test reliability by testing all parts of the test contribute equally to what is being measured.
What are the eight threats to validity?
- Extraneous variables
- Confounding variables
- Participant variables
- Situational variables
- Social desirability bias
- Researcher bias
- ## Demand characteristics
What is an extraneous variable?
Am extraneous variable is a variable which is not the IV which may effect the DV if left unchecked and uncontrolled.
What is a Confounding variable?
A confounding variable is a variable which is not the IV that is effecting the DV and therefore reducing the validity of the experiment.
