Types of Tissue Flashcards
Purpose of epithelial tissue
Epithelial tissue consist of one or more layers or cells that line the body cavity
Its purpose is for protection, absorption, secretion of substances
Purpose of supporting tissues
Give examples
1) For structure and protection
2) Examples include cartilage, bones, tendons and blood
Give examples of muscle tissue
Smooth
Skeletal
Heart
Give examples of nerve tissue
Brain
Peripheral
Visceral
Examples of germ cells
Ova and Sperm
How does haematoxylin&Eosin stain work?
Give examples of structures that are normally stained blue
What does eosin stain pink?
What does eosin stain orange/red?
What substances do not stain with H&E?
Haemoxtylin=stains acidic substances blue
Eosin=stains alkaline substances pink
Cell nuclei and RNA
Cytoplasm and colloidal proteins (plasma) and extracellular fibres such as collagen and elastic fibres
Keratin
Water extra-cellular jelly and fat
What substances does Alcian Blue stain blue?
GAG
Mucous goblet cells
Mast cell granules
Cartilahe matrix
What does iron haemotoxlyin stain black?
Nuclei and elastic fibres
What does Periodic Acid Shiff (PAS) stain magenta?
It essentially stains HEXOSE sugars
Hexose sugars are contained in goblet cell mucins, cartilage matrix, glycogen, basement membrane and glycocalyx.
What does toluidine blue stain dark blue?
Pale blue?
Bright purple?
1) Nuclei, ribosomes, cytoplasm
2) Cartilage matrix, mast cell granules
3) GAG
What type of cells tend to be dormant?
Small cells whereas larger cells tend to be more active.
