Types of Sexual Reprodution Flashcards
Autogamy
Self-fertilization of male gamates and female gamates (sex cells) produced by the same individual.
Allogamy
The fertilization of an ovum from one individual with the sperm of another.
In humans, the fertilization event is an example of allogamy.
Also, cross pollination in plants is an example.
Interal Fertilization
Occurs when the gamates meet inside of the female’s body.
Direct (with the use of sex organs) or indirect (butting up against each other or depositing sex gamates into the environment to be picked up by the females).
ex. humans (direct)
chickens (butting)
scorpions (depositing)
External Fertilization
Releasing gamates directly into the water and the union takes place out of the body.
Both sex gamates need to be released in synchronisation.
Used by most sexual aquatic animals.
