Types Of Seperation Flashcards
What is evaporation?
Heating to separate a soluble substance (table salt) from water.
What is filtration?
Separating an insoluble substance from a liquid by passing the mixture through porous paper.
What is paper chromatography?
Using long strips of paper to draw lighter dissolved substances away from heavier dissolved substances (eg different colored dyes)
What is distillation?
A combination of two substances - evaporation, followed by condensation (eg to make pure water from seawater)
What is centrifuging?
Spinning to separate lighter from heavier substances (eg blood cells from plasma)
What is a separating funnel?
A device to separate heavy liquids (eg water) from lighter liquids (eg kerosene)
What is using a magnet?
Attracting substances made of iron, nickel and cobalt in order to separate them from other substances.
What is decanting?
Pouring off the liquid at the top of a container with an insoluble substance (eg water and sand mixture)
