Types of Research Designs Flashcards
Qualitative
More opinions, thoughts, and attitudes (subjective)
Quantitative
Non Experiemntal (minimal control) Quasi Experimental True Experiemntal (maximal control)
Non Experimental
Cohort
Case Control
Cohort
Usually prospective, longitudinal, 2 groups (1 with outcome and one without)
Looking for an association between a suspected risk factor and its outcome
Steps of cohort study
Selection of study population (free of disease)
Obtaining data on exposure (assess their baseline)
Selection of comparison group (comparison group not exposed to risk factor)
Follow up
Analysis
Case Control
Usually retrospective
Longitudinal
2 groups (1 with and 1 without)
Problem = you don’t really know if the rick factors or the outcome comes first
Quasi Experimental Design
Don’t adequately control for the influence of extraneous variables (most commonly random assignment, no control group…simply a pre and post test)
True Experimental Design
Pretest-Posttest Control Group (RCT) – always prospective, has an intervention, gold standard for evaluating treatment
Posttest only – identical to RCT w/o pretest
Factorial – allows interaction effects, allows multiple IVs and levels
Repeated measures – each subject serves as own control
Ideal design for RCT
Placebo controlled
Randomized
Double blind
Crossover design
