Types of Records Flashcards
Running Record
a detailed narrative account of behavior recorded in a sequential manner as it happens
Anecdotal Record
narrative account describing an incident of a child’s behavior that is of interest to the observer recorded after behavior recorded
Event Sampling
the observer waits for and records a specific preselected behavior
Time Sampling
to observe specified behavior of an individual or group
Checklist
list of specific traits or behaviors arranged in logical order
Running Record Advantages
- rich in detail
- focuses on all behaviors
- understand the context in which the behavior occurs
Running Record Disadvantages
- time consuming
- difficult to use when observing a group
- observers keep themselves apart from the children which would be hard for a teacher to do
Anecdotal Advantages
-specific behavior
Anecdotal Disadvantages
-takes a long time
Event Sampling Advantages
- can be used to study infrequent behavior
- notes behaviors each time they occur
- notes the preceding circumstances
- notes the consequences of the behavior
Event Sampling Disadvantages
- focuses on one behavior
- doesn’t have as much detail as running record or anecdotal
Time Sampling Advantages
- takes less time
- can record data on many children at once
- provides info about the intervals of behavior
- counts of behavior can be used for research purposes
Time Sampling Disadvantages
- may miss important behaviors
- context of the behavior is not noted
- limited to behaviors that occur frequently and not rare behaviors that might also be important
Checklist Advantages
- used to condense info
- little training required
Checklist Disadvantages
- not detailed
- doesn’t know how often the behavior occurs
