Types of Reactions Flashcards
Name the 5 common types of reactions:
Combustion Synthesis Decomposition Single Displacement Double Displacement
What happens in a combustion reaction? Give an example:
Hydrocarbons + Oxygen yields carbon dioxide and water; C2H5OH + 3O2 –> 2CO2 + 3H2O
What happens in a synthesis reaction? Give an example:
A + B yields C; Typically 2 elements make a compound; 2Mg + O2 —-> 2MgO
What happens in a decomposition reaction? Give an example:
Opposite of synthesis; Large compound decomposes to two or more simpler compounds; 2NaHCO3 —-> H2O + CO2 + Na2CO3
What happens in a single displacement reaction? Give an example:
Compound and element react to form a new compound and element; Mg + 2HCl —-> MgCl2 + H2
What happens in a double displacement reaction? Give an example:
Two compounds react to form two new compounds; AgNO3 + NaCl —-> AgCl + NaNO3
