Types of Reactions Flashcards
Synthesis (Addition/Direct Combination)
A type of chemical reaction in which two or more simple substances combine to form a more complex product. The reactants may be elements or compounds. The product is always a compound.
Decomposition
A compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds. These reactions often involve an energy source such as heat, light, or electricity that breaks apart the bonds of compounds.
Displacement
A chemical reaction in which a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound. Both metals and non-metals take part in displacement reactions.
Neutralisation
A chemical reaction in which an acid and a base react quantitatively with each other. In a reaction in water, neutralization results in there being no excess of acid or base present in solution.
ACID + BASE -> SALT + WATER
Acid + Metal
Some metals react with acids to produce a salt (ionic compound) and hydrogen gas.
ACID + METAL -> SALT + HYDROGEN
Acid + Carbonate
ACID + CARBONATE -> SALT + WATER + CARBON DIOXIDE
Corrosion
Generally, a reaction involving the oxidation of metal. The more reactive the metal, the more likely it is to corrode.
METAL + OXYGEN -> METAL OXIDE
