Types of Reactions Flashcards
What is a combination reaction?
A+B —> AB
What is a decomposition reaction?
AB —> A+B
What is a single displacement reaction?
ONE element reacts with a compound to take the place of ONE of the elements in that compound
What is a double displacement reaction?
2 compounds EXCHANGE PARTNERS with each other to produce 2 different compounds
AB+CD —> AC+BD
What is a combustion reaction?
fuel + O2 —> CO2 + H2O (+heat)
What is addition of alkenes?
Break the double bond and add either hydrogen or a halogen. (Also called a combination reaction)
alkEne —> alkAne
H2C=CH2 + Cl2 —> CH2Cl - CH2Cl
What is substitution of alkanes?
One or more chlorine or fluorine atoms take the place of one or more hydrogen atoms in a hydrocarbon.
CH4 + Cl2 —> CH3Cl + HCl
