Types of Reactions Flashcards
Synthesis
When 2 or more reactants combine to form a single product. A + B = AB
Single Replacement
When 1 element is substituted for another element in a compound. A + BC = B +AC
Double Replacement
When the +ve and -ve ions of 2 ionic compounds exchange places to form 2 new compounds. AB + CD = AD + CB
Combustion
When a fuel undergoes oxidation by reacting with an oxidising agent, resulting in the release of energy. Fuel + O2 = CO2 + H2O
Decomposition/Analysis
When a compound breaks down into simpler substances. AB = A + B
Neutralisation
Acid + Base = Salt +H2O. Involves the combination of H+ ions and OH- ions to generate H2O.
Redox/Oxidisation
Involves the transfer of e- from one species to another. The loss of e- is oxidation and the gain of e- is reduction.
Incomplete Combustion
Only partial burning of a fuel. May be due to a lack of oxygen or low temp, preventing the complete chemical reaction.
