Q

What is a synthesis reaction?

A

The reactants can be atoms, molecules, or both.

The product MUST be a MOLECULE

Q

What is Non-Hydrocarbon Combustion??

A
  • Does NOT involve hydrocarbons.
  • Typically involves gases like H2 or S.
  • Still requires oxygen.
  • Considered both combustion and synthesis.

Q

What is a single displacement reaction??

A
  • Reaction where one element displaces the other.
  • Use Activity Series and Halogens Series. Used ONLY in single displacement reactions.

6Na + Fe + Cl2 —-> 3Na2O + 2Fe
Fe + Na2O —-> NR

Q

What is a double displacement reaction??

A

AX + BY —-> AY + BX

  • Use SOLUBILITY table.
  • If BOTH products are aqueous there is NO reaction.
  • If at least one product is “low solubility”, there IS a reaction.

15
Q

In double displacement reactions, what is a solid formation??

A

One of the products is a SOLID precipitate.

Use SOLUBILITY table.

16
Q

In a double displacement reaction, what is a Gas formation??

A

When one if the products is H2CO3(aq) or NH4OH(aq), a gas is produced through Decomposition.

H2SO4 + NaCO3 –> Na2SO4(aq) + H2CO3 –> Na2SO4(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

NH4Cl + NaOH –> NaCl + NH4OH –> NaCl + H2O + NH3(g)

17
Q

In a double displacement reaction, what is a Water formation??

A

Also known as a neutralization reaction.

Occurs between and ACID and a BASE.

HCl + NaOH –> NaCl + H2O(l)
