Types Of Reactions Flashcards
For a synthesis reaction, what is the rule about Non- metal oxides?
When reacted with water they become ACIDS.
H2O + CO2 —-> H2CO3
H2O + SO2 —-> H2SO3
What are the 5 types of reactions?
Synthesis Decomposition Combustion Single displacement Double displacement
For a synthesis reaction, what is the rule about Metal Oxides?
When reacted with water, Metal Oxides become BASES.
Na2O + H2O —-> NaOH
ZnO + H2O —-> Zn (OH)2
What is a synthesis reaction?
The reactants can be atoms, molecules, or both.
The product MUST be a MOLECULE
S + O2 —> SO2
What is a decomposition reaction?
Reactants are ALWAYS molecules
Products can be atoms, molecules, or both.
3N2H2 —-> 2N2 + 2NH3
What are the rules for decomposition reactions??
1) Binary compounds decomposing into elements.
2) Metal Nitrate decomposes into Metal Nitrate and O2.
3) Metal carbonate decomposes into Metal Oxide and CO2.
4) Metal hydroxide decomposes into metal Oxide and H2O.
What is a combustion reaction??
Reaction that produces heat and light using oxygen.
What is Hydrocarbon Combustion?
2 types:
Complete combustion
CX + HY + O2 —-> CO2 + H2O
Incomplete combustion:
CXHY+O2 —-> C+CO+CO2+H2O
What is complete combustion?
CX + HY + O2 —-> CO2 + H2O
Produces a blue flame.
HIGH heat.
LOW light.
Leaves behind no ash.
What is Incomplete Combustion??
CXHY+O2 —-> C+CO+CO2+H2O
Produces yellow flame.
LOW heat.
HIGH light.
Leave behind ash.
What is Non-Hydrocarbon Combustion??
- Does NOT involve hydrocarbons.
- Typically involves gases like H2 or S.
- Still requires oxygen.
- Considered both combustion and synthesis.
2Mg + O2 —-> MgO + heat/ light
What is Cellular Respiration??
- Involves carbohydrates.
(CX HY OZ) - Slow and continuous.
- Supports life.
What is a single displacement reaction??
- Reaction where one element displaces the other.
- Use Activity Series and Halogens Series. Used ONLY in single displacement reactions.
6Na + Fe + Cl2 —-> 3Na2O + 2Fe
Fe + Na2O —-> NR
What is a double displacement reaction??
AX + BY —-> AY + BX
- Use SOLUBILITY table.
- If BOTH products are aqueous there is NO reaction.
- If at least one product is “low solubility”, there IS a reaction.
BaCl2 (aq) + NaSO4 (aq) —-> BaSO4(s) + NaCl (aq)
What are the 3 types of double displacement reactions??
Solid formation.
Gas formation.
Water formation (neutralization).
