Types of Reaction Flashcards
Chemical reaction
A process in which atoms are rearranged and new products are formed.
Physical process
A physical change of state only, involving no rearrangement of atoms and no new products.
Chemical symbol
A chemical’s identity according to the Periodic Table.
Chemical formula
A chemical’s identity formed from the symbols of all elements within the substance.
Element
A substance containing only one type of atom. Found on the Periodic Table.
Compound
A substance containing two or more different types of atom.
Atom
The smallest unit of a particular element.
Molecule
Two or more atoms chemically bonded together.
Conservation of mass
Mass of reactants = mass of products.
Word equation
A way of describing what is happening in a chemical process using the names of the reactants, the products, and an arrow.
Balanced symbol equation
A chemical equation showing exact amounts of each substance and their chemical formulae.
Reactants
The chemicals on the left-hand side of a chemical equation, which react to form the products.
Products
The chemicals on the right-hand side of a chemical equation, which form from the reactants.
Thermal decomposition
A chemical reaction in which a substance breaks down when heated.
Precipitate
An insoluble solid formed from reaction between solutions.
