types of rainfall Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 3 types of rainfall
A
- frontal
- relief
- convectional
2
Q
how does frontal rain form
A
- areas of warm and cold air are blown towards eachother
- the lighter, less dense air is forced to rise over the denser cold air
- frontal rain produces a variety of clouds bringing moderate rain
3
Q
how does relief rain form
A
- the prevailing wind picks up moisture from the sea
- the moist, warm air is forced to rise. cool and condense forming clouds
- the air drops down over the mountain, warming as it does. as it warms, the amount of water It holds increases, meaning little rain occurs
4
Q
how does convectional rain form
A
- the suface of the earth is heated by the sun
- warm surface heats the air above, hot air rises and cools and condenses
- convection produces cumulus-nimbus clouds, thick and heavy, producing heavy rain and thunder/lightening
