Hymns
A
- Songs of praise and thanksgiving
- Individual thanksgiving
- Communal thanksgiving
- General praise - Attempts to magnify the name of God and boast about His greatness.
- Descriptive - Praise of God’s attributes and acts.

Penitential Psalms
A
- Expresses sorrow for sin and appeals to God for forgiveness.
- Can be personal or corporate.
- David wrote 5 out of the 7.

Wisdom and Didactic Psalms
A
- General observations on life, especially our relationship to God.
- Often includes the exhortation to fear the Lord.

Royal Psalms
A
- Focus on the king as the son of David and as God’s special instrument to rule his people.
- God accomplishes His plans through his “anointed.”
- He is heir to God’s covenant 2 Sam. 7.
- Enthronement Psalms were sung at the coronation of kings

Messianic Psalms
A
- Describe some aspect of the Messiah’s person or ministry.
- They describe God’s ‘anointed one’ who would one day restore Israel and establish everlasting salvation.

Imprecatory Psalms
A
- A call for God’s judgement against His enemies, or His people’s enemies.
- Can be individual or corporate.
- David wrote many of these - But David did not take vengeance on his enemies, he called God to execute judgement.
- To “imprecate” means to pray against, or to invoke evil, or call down a curse upon something or someone.

Lament Psalms
A
- Lament one’s condition; usually include a statement of lament, a statement of trust in God, and an affirmation of praise to Him.
- Most of the Psalms are of lament Psalms.
- Individual lament - directly addressed to God, they petition God to rescue and defend.
- Communal lament - the nation rather than the individual makes the lament.

The Degree or Psalms of Ascents or Pilgrimage songs
A
- Sung by pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles.
- Sung when the choir ascended the stairs leading to the court of men in the temple.
- The reference may also be musical in nature referring to the notes rising higher in degrees in succession.

Hallel Pslams
A
- Use the word “Hallel” and “Hallelujah” often.
- These six Psalms were sung on the night of Passover.
- Psalm 118 was likely the Psalm sung during the Triumphal entry.
