Dramatic monologue
Speaker “thinking aloud” in a poem, expressing ideas or thoughts without reply
Ballad
A song-like narrative poem
Elegy
A lyric poem of mourning; often(but not always) the stages of mourning: lamentation(grief), praise, acceptance
Epic
Long narrative poem that relates to great deeds or the journey of larger-than-life hero
Epitaph
Brief inscription on a gravestone or commemorative poem
Free verse
Unrhymed poem, no rules
Idyll
Short poem depicting a peaceful, country scene, or a long poem that tells a story about heroic deeds/extraordinary events in a distant past
Limerick
5-line poem, rhyme scheme: a-a-b-b-a. First, second, and fifth lines are three metrical feet; third and fourth are two metrical feet.
Lyric
Subjective, personal nature that expresses abstract ideas, perceptions, and feelings rather than telling a story
Ode
Serious and elaborate lyrical poem, praising or offering commentary on a person, place, or object. Classics occur in 3 parts.
Pastoral
Depicts rural life in a peaceful, idealized way
Sonnet
14 line lyric poem in a iambic pentameter
Shakespearean sonnet
3 quatrains and a couplet: abab cdcd efef gg
Spenserian sonnet
3 quatrains and a couplet: abab bcbc cdcd ee
Petrarchan sonnet
An octave and a sestet: abbaabba cdecde
Sestina
Six line stanzas followed by a tercet(39 lines total); same set of six words ends the lines of each of the six-line stanzas, but in different order
Spiritual
Folk song, often a religious theme
Terza rima
3-line stanzas in chain phone of aba, bcb, cdc, ded; there is no limit to the number of lines
Villanelle
Poetic form with no meter, but a repletion of entire lines; the rhyme-and-refrain pattern of the villanelle can be schematized as A1bA2,abA1,abA2,abA1,abA2,abA1A2
Scansion
Process of analyzing a poem’a meter and rhythm
Rhythm
“Beat” of the poem, as achieved by arrangement of syllables
Meter
Arrangement of accented and unaccented syllables in a line of poetry
Foot
Basic repeated sequence of meter comprised of two or more accented or unaccented syllables
Anapestic
3-syllable foot (intervene)
