Acrostic

Ballad
poem written in unrhymed iambic pentameter that is often unobtrusive
Blank Verse
poem written about one self’s life, personality traits, and ambitions
Bio
poem that treats a serious subject as humor
Burlesque
medieval Italian lyric style poetry with five or six stanzas and a shorter ending stanza
Canzone
poetry with five lines
- 1 word (the title)
- 2 words that describe the title
- 3 words that tell the action
- 4 words that express the feeling
- 1 word which recalls the title
Cinquain
uses typographical arrangements to display an element of the poem
Concrete
poem with 2 lines which may be rhymed or unrhymed
Couplet
type of poem which is spoken to a listener who unwittingly reveals details about him/herself
Dramatic Monologue
sad and thoughtful poem about the death of an individual
Elegy
extensive, serious poem that tells the story of a heroic figure
Epic
very short, ironic and witty poem usually written as a brief couplet or quatrain
Epigram
commemorative inscription on a tomb or mortuary monument written to praise the deceased
Epitaph
poetry written in either rhyme or unrhymed lines that have no set fixed metrical pattern
Free Verse
Japanese poem composed of 3 unrhymed lines of 5, 7 and 5 morae, usually containing a season word
Haiku
one short syllable followed by one long one in five sets in a row (e.g. la-LAH la-LAH la-LAH la-LAH la-LAH)
Iambic Pentameter
poem that is made up of a list of items or events

poetry that tells about the word and uses the letters of the word for the 1st letter of each line
Name
lengthy lyric poem typically of serious/meditative nature and has an elevated style and formal stanza structure
Ode
poem that depicts rural life in a peaceful, romanticized way
Pastoral
sonnet consisting of an octave rhyming abbaabba followed by a setset of cddcee or cdecde
Petrarchan Sonnet
stanza or poem consisting of 4 lines where lines 2 and 4 must rhyme and have the same number of syllables
Quatrain
