Lyric Poetry, Narrative Poetry, and Dramatic Poetry
A type of poetry that is usually short and is
written in stanzas ; This poem expresses strong emotions or feelings of the poet or the speaker.
Lyric Poetry
A poem that talks about death and mourning ;
This is usually written and recited to lament
for the dead.
Elegy
A short traditional Japanese poem that
consists three lines with seventeen
syllables (5-7-5) It generally evokes the natural world that includes seasons, plants, insects, or
animals.
Haiku
Writers of the most famous haikus.
Basho, Buson, Shiki, and Issa
A poem that consists of five lines and follows the aabba rhyme scheme. It can be humorous or nonsensical that has marriage and love as the themes.
Limerick
Poem of exaltation. It is generally written
and recited as a praise or tribute to people,
objects, qualities, or ideas.
Ode
A type consists of 14 lines that is
usually related to love. The rhyme is arranged according to a rhyme scheme that is usually
Petrarchan and Elizabethan rhyme
scheme.
Sonnet

This type features shepherds and pastures ;
It evokes or portrays and idealized rural life.
Pastoral
A type of poetry that tells a story with the use
of rhymes and other poetic devices ; It is usually told by a narrator and sometimes makes use of the voice of the characters in its verse.
Narrative Poetry
A poem that is intended to be sung ; It narrates a story in short stanzas ; are usually of unknown authorship and have been passed from generation to generation through recitation.
Ballad
A long narrative poem that typically narrates stories of the deeds and adventures of heroic people such as gods, kings, prices, and knights ; are popular in the ancient time for they are used to keep a record of the ancient people’s history and culture.
