Types Of Plate Boundaries Flashcards
-location where two tectonic places meet
-has three types;
divergent, convergent, and transform
Plate Boundary
-exists between two plates that move apart
-also known as constructive boundary
-leads to the creation of volcano
Divergent Plate Boundary
-exists between two plates that move toward each other
-also known as a destructive boundary
-leading edges could
be continental- continental, continental-oceanic, or oceanic-oceanic
Convergent Plate Boundary
Kinds of convergent boundary:
Two oceanic plates that meet head on, causing the denser plate to be pushed underneath the lighter one
Oceanic-Oceanic Convergence
Kinds of convergent boundary: Happens when the continental plate meets with an oceanic plate, causing the oceanic plate to subduct
- Trench, volcano and/or volcanic arc
Continental- Oceanic Convergence
Kinds of convergent boundary: Two continental plates collide and neither of the two is pushed underneath
- Volcano, mountain and/or mountain ranges
Continental- Continental Convergence
-exists between two plates that move slide horizontally past each other
-also known as conservative boundary
-lie parallel or vertical to the
direction of plate movement
-leads to the creation of fault lines and earthquakes
Transform Plate Boundary
Kinds of Transform Plate Boundaries: Hanging walls that move down relative to the footwall
Normal Fault
Kinds of Transform Plate Boundaries:
Also known as thrust fault, wherein the hanging wall moves up relative to the footwall
Reverse Fault
Kinds of Transform Plate Boundary:
Dominant displacement occurs along the strike of a fault
Strike-slip Fault
